Avril Lavigne expressed excitement when she initially heard "Cheers to That" by Rihanna. The punk rock singer said she was pleased to know that Rihanna sampled her song "I'm With You". When asked why she was not invited over to come over the studio to sing it with Rihanna, Avril was told by the producers that the recording was already completed. She said that when she listened to it, she was delighted.
According to 977music, Rihanna also said that she was just glad to use Avril’s song as a sample saying that it made a huge impact on the instrumental part; that if not for the “yeah, yeah, yeah’s”, the whole track would have sounded different.
